International Women’s Week 2021

Creative Direction • Illustration • Layout & Design

Building off the United Nations’ 2021 theme, the Ryerson International Women’s Week planning committee has chosen this year’s theme to be “Women at the front and centre of the COVID-19 pandemic”, highlighting the incredible ways that women have been driving change over the last year while also facing disproportionate impacts.

Brief
With this year’s theme finalized as “Women at the front and centre of the COVID-19 pandemic”, the International Women’s Week planning committee needed graphics that could accurately represent this year’s theme and could be applied across multiple digital platforms.

Goal
My role as the graphic designer for this event was
• create a set of visuals that could be used across different digital platforms (i.e. web banners, social media cards, email blast campaigns)
• develop visuals that gave an empowering, bright, positive, and inclusive feeling

End Result
The main focus of the visual is the group of diverse women, who were each inspired by a different event that was taking place for the IWW. The story behind the visual is that they are all marching forward together to everything that is empowering to be a women. Traits such as leadership, strength, and bravery – everything that “Women at the front and centre of the COVID-19 pandemic” possesses.

The Colour Palette

I wanted to make sure that this campaign also incorporated Ryerson’s branding in some way, shape or form to allow viewers to see the university’s hand in this event. I didn’t want this event to appear as if it was something completely separate from the university; it was important to utilize Ryerson’s branding in the IWW campaign to show that this was a joint effort. Moreover, the use of the secondary and tertiary palette versus just using Ryerson’s primary blue and gold palette allowed me to convey a bright and positive visual with the use of the intense, vibrant colours.
